A Long Walk

Sleepless at about 4.50am a few days ago, I decided the only way forward was to tire myself out. There are several ways to do this in Bangkok, but I decided a walk would make for more family-friendly reading.

So I popped out of the apartment building on New Petchburi Road, walked all the way down Thong Lo, turned right onto Sukhumvit, got stopped and searched by the police (a first – they were very polite and courteous, and didn’t solicit a bribe), wandered from soi 55 to soi 7/1, went into Subway, had a Meatball footlong meal, read the paper, walked back to Soi 21, turned left down Asok and walked up to New Petchburi Road. By this time the sun was well and truly up, and I was sweating vigorously. The thought of getting a taxi for the last mile and a half did occur to me, but I braved the conditions and made it back in one sweaty, gibbering piece.

Total distance, 6.6 miles.
Total time: 2hrs 30mins, but I spent at least 30 mins stuffing my face and reading the paper in Subway.

Conclusion: Walking in England was a lazy way to exercise. Pop the iPod on, and wander about for a bit. It never got particularly hot, and whilst Milton Keynes wasn’t completely flat, at least the inclines were reasonably gentle. Bangkok is a different matter – all the city streets I walked along had at least six lanes of traffic, and the only ways of crossing are either by footbridge or suicidal dash. Even at 5am the heat and humidity are incredible.

Here’s my route, courtesy of the Gmap Pedometer.

Safety Tips for Cyclists

  • 30mph is probably an inappropriate speed for a bicycle
  • Blind corners should be taken considerably slower than this
  • Cellphone conversations can be distracting at the best of times
  • Especially if you don’t have a hands-free headset

And so I hurtled around the corner of the underpass at excessive speed, chattering away to a friend on my phone (thus cycling one-handed), pulled a sharp left, encountered an unexpected pedestrian, swerved, lost my balance, and did one of those slow-motion falls where you know you’re going to fall, and you know it’s going to hurt, and the whole thing happens in slow motion but you can’t do anything about it.

I escaped with cuts and bruises, a battered ego, and a determination to turn my phone off next time I go out on the bike…

The Cyclist

After spending three hours upgrading servers last night, I had the morning off work. So I finally bought a bicycle.

I am rather disappointed to report that I am even less healthy than I thought. Frustratingly, the route to work has an enormous uphill bit at the start, and another enormous uphill bit at the end. Given that I’m generally less than cheerful in the mornings anyway, I don’t think this is going to help. It does make the ride home more enjoyable though.

Anyway, I made it – five miles to work, and five miles back again.

My arse hurts.

That is all.

Blisters

So that’s the first week of the new job over. I’ve been getting there in the mornings using public transport, and then either walking two miles to the city centre to get a bus home, or biting the bullet and walking the whole five miles straight home.

So in the past five days, I have walked approximately 20 miles. My feet are very sore, but I feel healthier, and am currently wearing the most comfortable shoes in the world, which is helping a lot.

I might buy a bicycle over the weekend, and cut out the public transport part entirely. Cycling ten miles a day will be a step up, but I don’t think it’s entirely unrealistic. Words I suspect I may come to regret on Monday morning…
