Safety Tips for Cyclists

  • 30mph is probably an inappropriate speed for a bicycle
  • Blind corners should be taken considerably slower than this
  • Cellphone conversations can be distracting at the best of times
  • Especially if you don’t have a hands-free headset

And so I hurtled around the corner of the underpass at excessive speed, chattering away to a friend on my phone (thus cycling one-handed), pulled a sharp left, encountered an unexpected pedestrian, swerved, lost my balance, and did one of those slow-motion falls where you know you’re going to fall, and you know it’s going to hurt, and the whole thing happens in slow motion but you can’t do anything about it.

I escaped with cuts and bruises, a battered ego, and a determination to turn my phone off next time I go out on the bike…

Mileage

Half way through the week, I’ve cycled 25 miles so far – 5 miles each way to work and back. If I can keep this up for the rest of the week, that’ll be 50 miles in 5 days. This must be a good thing.

I do feel a little healthier, but haven’t weighed myself in a while. The endorphins are aflow by the time I get to the office, which is a more efficient wake-up technique than any breakfast cereal I’ve discovered so far.

The only obvious down-side is that I apparently need to either stop cycling, smoking or breathing soon, as my lungs are far from happy with the current state of affairs.

The Cyclist

After spending three hours upgrading servers last night, I had the morning off work. So I finally bought a bicycle.

I am rather disappointed to report that I am even less healthy than I thought. Frustratingly, the route to work has an enormous uphill bit at the start, and another enormous uphill bit at the end. Given that I’m generally less than cheerful in the mornings anyway, I don’t think this is going to help. It does make the ride home more enjoyable though.

Anyway, I made it – five miles to work, and five miles back again.

My arse hurts.

That is all.

Blisters

So that’s the first week of the new job over. I’ve been getting there in the mornings using public transport, and then either walking two miles to the city centre to get a bus home, or biting the bullet and walking the whole five miles straight home.

So in the past five days, I have walked approximately 20 miles. My feet are very sore, but I feel healthier, and am currently wearing the most comfortable shoes in the world, which is helping a lot.

I might buy a bicycle over the weekend, and cut out the public transport part entirely. Cycling ten miles a day will be a step up, but I don’t think it’s entirely unrealistic. Words I suspect I may come to regret on Monday morning…
