Device Driver Gripe

How hard would it actually be for Microsoft to implement a feature in Windows Device Manager where you could see what the “Unknown VGA device” actually is, or at least claims to be?

As it stands, the only thing I can do is reboot into a Linux install CD, just to run lspci. Then I can reboot back into Windows and actually know which driver I need to download. Which seems a bit silly, really…

  1. I seem to remember that the old (textmode) msinfo used to be able to do this. It isn’t on my XP box though, and msinfo32 doesn’t look like it’d be much help.

So, as is usual, most of the handy low level stuff we take for granted on linux has to be hunted down for windows.

PCI32 does the job pretty well, although it does cause my fan control software to crash for some reason…
