Inconvenience

I managed to lose my wallet somewhere between a bar and my home last night, which also means I lost a wad of cash, two debit cards, two credit cards with several thousand pounds of available credit between them, my National Insurance card, my casino membership card, and I suppose I’ll have to buy a new wallet as well.

I have spent most of the day on the telephone.

Forget ID cards, how about RFID-enabled wallets? I’d love to know where it’s got to.

The police were very helpful:

“Did you lose it, or was it taken out of your pocket without you noticing?”

“How on earth would I know that, if I hadn’t noticed?”

“It’s either Lost Property, or Theft. You have to tell us which one.”

“…”

So Many Words

Still working on a review of the various books, films, albums etc I’ve been consuming lately.

In the meantime, I’ve republished the Thailand 2004 diary from my first trip to the Far East. I’m still working on writing up this year’s trip, tentatively titled “Thailand 2005″. Original, no?

Despite merciless editing, I don’t think it reads as well as the diary from Rome 2004, but it’s included for completion’s sake, and as a source of reference for its forthcoming sequel(!)

I might add a ‘Recent Reading’ block to the sidebar, as I’m getting through novels faster than I can write about them at the moment.

Another project idea which occurred to me, and almost immediately terrified me almost to death, is to catalogue every book I have ever read. Not necessarily with a full review, but with enough information for me to remember which one it was, and maybe a rating system. How would I even begin? It would be an enormous strain, but I’d love to know how many books I’ve read. Can I remember them all?

I’m really talking about novels here, not textbooks or reference manuals, but it would still be an enormous task, and I’ve no idea how I’d build such a thing into WordPress.

The Londoner

haircuts

In a bar in Islington, North London:

Her: “So where in London do you live?”
Me: “I don’t live in London.”
Her: (Blank stare)

I did have an excellent weekend in our capital city, but would like to point out that even if it’s described on the menu as “Steak Sandwich, served in a toasted Portugese roll with light salad and french fries” instead of just “Burger and chips”, it still shouldn’t cost £8.50.

Oh, and any city where an £8 haircut is cheap enough to shout about is frankly insane. I remember paying £1.70 for mine when I was at college. Oh no, I’m turning into an old man, and rambling about how cheap things were when I was a lad. Erk.

Still, I suppose London wages would compensate for London prices to some extent. Perhaps I’m doing it the wrong way around – I should earn my salary in London, and then spend my weekends in the impoverished North, home of chips and gravy, and beer that costs less than £2 a pint…

I’ve been writing about my recent cultural habits, but haven’t finished yet. I’ve been doing lots of reading, taken in a few films, have been glued to the new series of Dr Who, and will discuss all of these and more here soon.

I also updated About Me, in case anyone doesn’t know who I am.

Branden Robinson

I wrote recently about the voter turnout in the Debian project’s search for a new Project Leader. I wrote that I would very much like Branden Robinson to win.

So it was nice to see on Slashdot this morning that Branden Robinson is the new Debian Project Leader. Congratulations Branden. Perhaps we will finally see Sarge released during his time as DPL.
